Hot Home Products: Steamed heat smart way to clean
09.09.11 - black and decker steam irons
Steam is a hot topic in home cleaning and fabric care these days, pushed as a green alternative to chemical cleaners, and a prudent choice for those sensitive to airborne contaminants.
It’s certainly easier on fabrics than direct heat from a dry iron, and using steam can refresh clothes and reduce the number of trips to the dry cleaner — one way to lessen your household’s chemical dependency.
Steam irons come at every price point, but Rowenta ( www.rowenta.ca ), a luxury European brand beloved by stylists, has launched the Pro Precision Steam Generator, a steam iron that sits atop of, and is connected to, a water tank. As with most steam appliances, tap water can be used unless your water has more than 12 parts per gallon of minerals or “hardness.” Check with your provider on this. In Toronto, it’s about 8.4 parts.
Steam can be controlled from, and dispensed in, either a horizontal or vertical direction, which makes it useful for refreshing draperies in place, furniture fabrics or hung garments. The very fussy will delight in running it over a freshly made bed for a hotel de luxe look.
