In the field: Starbucks Via a good option on outdoors trips, but pricey
WELLSTON -- Coffee has always been an important part of my outdoor experiences. I’m guilty of carrying a Thermos full of the brew even on mid-summer fishing trips.And it’s no secret that I’ve tried every possible approach to brewing good coffee in the backcountry from instant to cowboy coffee and portable percolators, too.
After years of trial and error, I’ve settled on one of those nifty portable Gold-filter drip cones made by MSR. For a group, I stay with a Lexan French Press.
So I was intrigued when Starbucks came out with "Via" its Ready Brew Packets. Those are tiny envelopes full of microground coffee combined with instant. They come three or eight to a package. You have a choice of Colombian or Italian brews or some flavored concoction. They cost about a buck per serving, not cheap for a cup of backcountry joe.
