Coffee replaced, for these workers, the alcohol-laced morning beverages consumed by manual laborers. My mother recalls older male relatives, before heading into the factories, downing what were referred to simply as "fortifiers."
With that first sip of coffee, my heart (metaphorically) starts beating, and the senses are booted up, as I contemplate my "to do" list for the day.
An excellent first sip often prompts me to decide that the two cups I drink every morning will tide me over until lunch. At the risk of hectoring from nutritionists, I am aware of this no-breakfast sin against my body and the healthy eating foundation they recommend.
Forgive me this one sin, for it is an original one.
And like all good earthy sins, it is best enjoyed at home.
While I realize I'm swimming upstream in our coffee house-obsessed society, I can't imagine starting my day with a frappa-froopa-whatever or any coffee purchased through a drivethrough window. I understand during the week, that with families on the run and breakfast business meetings abounding, you've got to take coffee any way you can get it.
